Cats are notoriously good at masking pain and discomfort β it's an evolutionary survival instinct. But that doesn't mean they don't suffer. Massage therapy for cats is a growing field, and for good reason: it reduces anxiety, improves circulation, and can significantly ease chronic pain.
1. Reduced Grooming
If your cat has stopped grooming certain areas of their body, it could be because reaching those spots is painful. Muscle tension or joint stiffness β especially in older cats β often manifests as patchy, unkempt fur.
2. Hiding More Than Usual
A cat that suddenly spends more time under the bed or in dark corners is often telling you something is wrong. Isolation is a classic sign of discomfort or anxiety in cats.
3. Flinching When Touched
If your cat flinches, hisses, or moves away when you touch certain areas β particularly along the spine, shoulders, or hips β this is a clear signal of muscle tension or soreness.
4. Changes in Posture
A hunched back, lowered head, or reluctance to jump are all signs of musculoskeletal discomfort. Cats with arthritis or muscle tension often adopt protective postures to minimise pain.
5. Increased Vocalisation
Unusual meowing, growling, or yowling β especially when moving or being handled β can indicate pain. If your vet has ruled out illness, massage therapy may provide significant relief.
What Our Massage Therapy Involves
At Boof Magic Spa, our certified animal massage therapists use gentle, breed-appropriate techniques to release muscle tension, improve lymphatic drainage, and calm the nervous system. Most cats visibly relax within the first 10 minutes of a session.
